Wednesday April 30, 2014 - HW#10 - Multiple Regression

Last Class for the semester.

Multiple Regression

How to use Excel for Multiple Regression and what you will need for the exam. This is my video from last year. Sorry that the Homework number is off. It was #9 in the past but it is #10 now.

HW#10 - Multiple Regression

Multiple Regression is a statistically model used to analyze the relationship between two or more independent variables and one dependent variable. If differs from linear regression in that is takes more than one independent variable into the model.

Assignment

  1. Download Excel Spreadsheet (here) File name has HW #9 but it is for HW #10, this semester.
  2. Watch the Windows or MAC videos below
  3. See "Understanding Output" video at the end of this post.
  4. Take Exam #10 (Thursday May 1, 2014  thru Sunday May 4, 2014 at midnight)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WINDOW USERS
make sure you have the multiple regression option available. If under Step #1 below, you do not see "Data Analysis", then skip to Step 1A.

Step 1

Switch to the "Data" tab in the Microsoft Excel ribbon and locate the "Data Analysis" at far right on ribbon. Click on the "Data Analysis" item to bring up the dialog box of the same name.

Step 2

Scroll through the list of Analysis Tools until you locate "Regression". Click on it to select it, and then click on the "OK" button at the right to open its dialog box.
Here is a quick video:

If you do not see "Data Analysis" under "Data" Tab, then to add that option see steps below:

Step 1A

Launch Microsoft Excel and click on the "File" tab in the ribbon. Select "Options" to open the Excel Options dialog box.

Step 2A

Click the "Add-Ins" item in the list on the left side of the dialog box. You will see "Analysis ToolPak" in the list of Inactive Application Add-Ins. Set the Manage drop-down menu to "Excel Add-Ins," and click on the "Go" button at the bottom of the dialog box to open the Add-Ins dialog box.

Step 3A

Tick the check box in front of "Analysis ToolPak" in the list of available add-ins. Click the "OK" button on the right side of the Add-Ins dialog box to turn on the Analysis ToolPak once you have selected it in the list of options.

Here is a video to help explain those three steps above:

MAC USERS
Excel 2011 does NOT have multiple regression built in. You will need to add some software from this link. This software is free. The software is called: STATPLUS LE

Here are two videos on how to install Statplus LE

Here is an example for MAC (EXCEL 2011) using Statplus LE

  1. Thank you Dr.Sistrunk for the Multiple Linear Regression practice. This homework actually goes hand-in-hand with the work that I just completed in my Management Decision Science class. We just had to analyze the data, but it is cool to actually create the data then analyze it. I find this information very foundational as I will have to use this when I enter business school and when I join the workforce.

  2. I strongly agree with Clinton. This assignment was very helpful in providing some clarity to the multiple linear regression work that we are doing in Management Decision Science. After watching the videos it was much easier for me to maneuver around the regression tables and arrive with the desired outcomes. Thank You!

  4. My next internship asked during my interview what i knew about fusion tables and collecting and synthesizing data and I was excited to tell them that i knew a lot. These assignments have proven to be more useful than i initially thought.

  5. The fact that we're learning multiple regression around the same time my management decision science class is awesome. These videos actually helped me do well on the MDS exam I took yesterday.
