Wednesday March 26, 2014 - Excel HW #5 - Pivot Tables Part 2 - Slicers

There are two assignments for this class. Read both sets of instructions and follow them exactly.

1) Slavery to Travon
Purchase the free book below.

Read this Timeline of  Reconstruction. Click Here

2) Excel HW #5 - Pivot Tables Part 2
Slicers are easy-to-use filtering components that contain a set of buttons that enable you to quickly filter the data in a PivotTable report, without the need to open drop-down lists to find the items that you want to filter.

Slicers provide buttons that you can click to filter PivotTable data. In addition to quick filtering, slicers also indicate the current filtering state, which makes it easy to understand what exactly is shown in a filtered PivotTable report.

When you select an item, that item is included in the filter and the data for that item will be displayed in the report. For example, when you select Callahan in the Salespersons field, only data that includes Callahan in that field are displayed.

Slicers only work with a few versions of Excel. These versions include Windows Excel 2010 and Apple Excel 2013. Below are helps videos for both versions.

I want you to use the excel data from HW#4. Create atleast two slicers on your pivot table worksheet and one chart. Save that Excel File and use the following form to upload the excel file to me. This is due by Sunday at Midnight.

Enforcing Online Cheating With ProctorU

by: Bryce Smith
In an age of new technology students are finding unique ways to cheat while taking online tests. Instead of studying college students are pulling up search engines like google during tests and scoring perfect scores. Campuses are now participating in massive open online courses which students can do every assignment online and complete final exams.  Colleges are now participating in a new service to avoid online cheating called ProctorU. This service allows for proctors to be in the college classrooms while students take tests.

The issue of online cheating concerns many educators, particularly as more students go for college credit not just for personal enrichment. Online classes are not new, but earlier courses typically didn’t have to handle exam proctoring on the scale required for many institutions. The University of Florida in Gainesville, for example, has long offered many programs for students studying far from the campus, with some monitoring done by ProctorU, Each proctor can monitor up to six students at a time, watching three side-by-side camera feeds on each of two screens. If a student’s decides to cheat, the proctor gives a warning via videoconferencing software, just as a classroom monitor might tell students to keep their eyes on their own papers.

ProctorU’s services will spread to many institutions within the next year as technology continues to improve. Eventually students will virtually be unable to cheat because of strict enforcement on college campuses.

Below is a video on the unique service:

Is Comcast getting too big?

By: Ajené Robinosn

Comcast is set to announce on Thursday (3/20/14) that it will be acquiring Time Warner Cable in a deal worth $45 billion. The acquisition of Time Warner Cable will be the 10th largest merger in U.S. history. Comcast, which is the largest cable service provider in the United States with over 20 million subscribers agreed to pay $158.82. This is roughly $30 more that the offer by Charter Communications that Time Warner Cable denied. Time Warner Cable, which has been independent from Time Warner since 2009, is the second largest cable provider in the country, with around 11 million subscribers. Due to this fact, the merging of these two companies will leave Comcast as the cable provider of around 30% of the United States. These staggering figures raise many eyebrows and have people asking the questions, is Comcast slowly becoming a monopoly, and should the Government step in?

As in any major merger the government has to analyze the specifics and regulate what is exactly going on, and in this case is about projected to take a year to do so. The government must keep the customers in mind when analyzing the effects of this deal. Many customers are afraid that Comcast is becoming a monopoly because they are literally buying out their national competition. When it comes to specific city competition Time Warner Cable and Comcast rarely compete for subscribers. Therefore, with this merger, Comcast is tapping into markets where they don’t have subscribers, like the city of New York where Time Warner Cable is the only good source of cable TV. This demand can cause Comcast to raise the prices of their service to increase their revenue. They can do this knowing that either the consumer probably won’t find another sufficient cable provider. Cable customers will be forced to look to other non-cable media providers like Netflix, or Hulu (which are greatly increasing in subscribers).

Also, the merger makes Comcast more of a giant in terms of channel deals. With the increase in market share Comcast has more leverage in buying and negotiations of cable channel owners like Walt Disney Company and Time Warner. This much pull in the cable industry may be too much power for one company. With their next competitor (AT&T U-verse) being 1/5 of their post-merger size there seems to be no stopping Comcast right now.

The Future of Interactive Media and Reality Television

BY: Kesmond Moultrie-Legree

This article discuss the future of interactive media and reality television, Interactive media is defined as “the integration of digital media including combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving images, and sound, into a structured digital computerized environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes.   Based on the success of shows such as American Idol, Survivor, The Bachelor, and The Real World, and their use of interactive media to enhance viewership, we can expect to see increased usage in the future.  Technology is constantly improving, providing networks with new opportunities to apply interactive media within their shows. Some field experts, such as Jason Gould, who “headed up an interactive media firm” in the early 1990s and “was a pioneering force in helping broadcasting tap its digital potential”, believe that “digital outfits have to see the future of interactive media to entice local-media partners”. I think there no reason to believe that we will see a decline of interactive media within the entertainment industry it may well change its shape and form from fixed to mobile limited media to rich media limited interaction to real time interaction.

The best example i think of how interactive media has change the climate of today's television, is by taking a closer look at all the reality tv shows out right now. There seems to be reality shows on everything that you could think of. Anything that seems like it is interesting has been turned into a reality show. Millions of people tune in to watch reality shows to see what will happen on that episode.

One of the most appealing parts of reality shows is that anyone could star in a reality show. Reality shows choose stars that are normal viewers that star in these shows. This makes reality shows even more appealing to the public, making them realize that you don't have to come from a wealthy family to become a star. It almost gives hope to a viewer that they, too, can become the next big celebrity. During many of the shows the viewers can interact with   Almost every network on television have some kind of reality tv show on it,  Many factors can be drawn in to why reality tv has been so successful, but undoubtedly one of the most important is the interactive media culture.

One of the key elements in the success to all these reality tv shows is the connection that viewers have with the talent on the shows through social media, reality tv trivia games, and also on the singing shows like The Voice and Americal Idol the viewers can text message there vote for their favorite contestant.

12 Years a Slave Wins Big

BY: Wiley Davis

In a subject that has related to many of the things we have studied in class, a movie that focuses on slavery, “12 Years a Slave.” The movie was recently awarded an Oscar for best picture. Also one of the movie’s stars, Lupita Nyong’o was award an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The award was merely a capstone on a run of recent successes for Nyong’o. Nyong’o has taken the world by storm during the award season for both her work on the screen as well as off. Nyong’o has stood out for her extremely dark skin tone and short hair, characteristics that defy many of the societally set standards of beauty. Her ascension to stardom has caused many of these stereotypes to be challenged as many view her as gorgeous. During her time in the spotlight, she has done a lot to challenge these standards and emphasize that her color is no issue. In one interview, Lupita went so far as to say that she used to pray to be another color, but eventually realized her own beauty.

I did get the opportunity to see “12 Years a Slave” while it was in theatres. The movie provided an extremely realistic view of slavery. The film did not shy away from graphic depictions of the beating, savagery, and rape that happened during the time. The fact that the movie was based on the true memoirs of Solmon Northup was also intriguing to me. It reminded me of the slave narratives that we are reading and what these narratives would look like if they were to be turned into a film.

Depiction of the real Solmon Northup:

Personally, I was not that fond of “12 Years a Slave” mainly due to the fact that I do not enjoy slave movies in general. However, I did pay to see this film in theatres because I believe that films like this should continue to be made because otherwise people will forget how gruesome and terrible slavery really was. On the other hand, I would like to see Black art recognized for films or works that do not simply embody the Black struggle. For example, I want to see the Black Hollywood community make a Static Shock movie. This would enable the world to see Black actors in a lead role as well as subtle influence of Black culture without overwhelming viewers of other races with stories of our struggle. There is more to our Blackness than just slavery and the Civil Rights movement, so while seeing “12 Years a Slave” being awarded on the national scene is nice, I desire more.

The Future Through a Green Lenses

 By: Charles Degeorge Jr.

Trying to predict what the technological future hold is a very interesting topic. The innovations of tomorrow may not be on the auction block today but all of the prototypes has the world waiting anxiously.  Companies and inventors have changed the way we look ways to organize, communicate and entertain. Now all of these things are aesthetically pleasing and gets your mind to wonder how far we can go.  Now that we have entered into an area in witch nothing less than a touch screen phone with a camera and internet is acceptable, and the people being more continues on the effect we have on the world.  How do we combine one with the other?

Well we already have plans to lower our footprint in the world we live in, but how often can we say that we are following these plans to the best of our abilities? Most of us do not know are monthly intake of water or the admissions we put out.  As a people we know we need to do better but we all do not always have time to pay attention or keep track as well as we would like.  Well the great and innovative minds of our world could have made it a little easier.

There are a series of devices that not only are aesthetically pleasing and beyond our time, but also good for the environment.  Such as the Electrolux eco cleaner. This invention is a portable dish washer that uses ultrasonic waves ionize food particles on the dishes and converts it to reusable compost for plants.  Now I must admit that it’s portable function maybe a little too much. I do not think we will be bring our fine china plates with us to a restaurant, but maybe that function will become more useful in the future. For now an in home eco dish washer would serve a nice purpose even if it is just to help you significant other with their occasional green thumb.  The next invention helps monitor your water intake. The 1 liter faucet only allows you 1 liter of water to wash your hands. The theory is that we waste about six liters of water in the typical 30 second hand wash and use only one. The water is stored in a tube like structure connected to the faucet and slowly releases water when you turn it on while still giving you the time and enough water pressure to get the job done.  The faucet looks pretty neat and serves a purpose. There are many more of these prototypes not all or being showcase a few of them are in the links below.

New Technology Lets You “Feel” Objects on a Tablet!!

BY: John Davies

When this, I was like “WHAT!” lol. The Japanese tech company Fujitsu has just unveiled a new technology that puts the “touch” back in touchscreen. Some of the feelings were kind of off but it is a prototype and it is still amazing that you were feeling something period.” In its press materials, Fujitsu lists a 2015 date for real-world applications.” What are your thoughts about this?

Whatsapp

BY: Sorin A. Ovreiu

Whatsapp is an instant messaging application for smartphones. The software is available for iOS, Android, BlackBerry OS. On February 19, 2014, Facebook announced that it will be buying whatsapp for an estimated $19 billion dollars. This is part of a recent trend for software companies to receive multi-billion dollar valuations. While not as widely used in the United States, whatsapp has over half a billion users worldwide with over 120 million monthly active users. Part of the reason whatsapp is popular is due to its functionality, user experience, and low cost compared to other alternatives.

Whatsapp’s functionality and user experience has allowed it to become extremely popular in Europe, Asia, and Africa. The app automatically compares the phone numbers in the phone address book to those in its database and adds the contacts to a list. Its free trial approach lets people try the app then have the option to purchase a membership after one year. This is how whatsapp generates its revenue. Furthermore, users are drawn to whatsapp for messaging rather than paying mobile service providers text messaging fees. In developing countries, especially, this helps thrifty users better spend their money.

The dominant driver for whatsapp’s 19 billion dollar valuation was its large user base. The market values increases in user base, which is reflected in the company’s acquisition price. Another factor that helped whatsapp reach its valuation is the user engagement rate.  The number of active users is important because those users could be monetized in the future, which is why Facebook is willing to pay such a high price.

The recent trend of tech companies being acquired for billions of dollars is a significant development. Less than 2 years ago, the photo sharing app Instagram was acquired by Facebook for one billion dollars. It is important to understand that tech companies monetize their users and have complex models to predict their future revenue per user. This can help us to become more aware of our social media usage and the types of services we sign up for.

Where is White History Month?

BY Nassar Omar

As we near the end of Black History Month, I begin to reflect on the lives of all of the prominent members of the black community whose lives deserve this month as piece of gratitude to their work. From Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and many other great black leaders, February is when the old share the impact of the leaders whom have shaped our communities and the young learn the important historical value of what has come before them.

February has always been a commemorative month in the United States to celebrate Black History since 1926. Additionally, other races and ethnic groups have also been given a month to pay respects to there heritage. March is Irish American History Month; May is Jewish-American History Month; October is Italian History Month. And the group that makes up 72 percent of the total population in the United States; well they don't have a commemorative month. So this begs the question…where is White History Month?

Lizabeth Paulet, writer of the article “Why White History Doesn’t Make Sense” argues that white history is already heavily ingrained in the American education system that a month to celebrate the history of white people is not necessary. “We all read Shakespeare but why not August Wilson? We learn about the Ottoman Empire and the rise and fall of the Nazis, but who here knows about the Belgian concentration camps in the congo…?” Lizabeth states.

The notion that white history is already engrained in our society is an accurate one but so is black history to an extant. I would argue that you either have both or none at all. The fact that Black History Month is even needed speaks to how really out of touch we are with the spectrum of black history. We need an entire month to set aside just for us to acknowledge and appreciate the work of those from the African American community.

With this said what are your thoughts gentlemen? Is White History Month necessary? The floor is open…

Evernote

BY: Oren Davidson

Evernote is an online notebook for everything. It is an online collection of everything its user wishes to store on their smartphone or Internet device. Evernote stores photos, web pages, notes, PDF files, audio clips, and to-do lists.

Evernote is an outstanding application for businessmen and women because it allows them to store files and organize everything easily. In the business world you must be familiar with all aspects of business and technology, and above all else you need to be organized. The great thing about Evernote that makes it so organized and easy to use is its indexing feature. Once you add things to your notebook they’re completely searchable and can be accessed on your desktop, the Web, or your mobile device.

Evernote is compatible and available for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Windows Phone, Web OS, PC, Mac, Google Chrome, and the Web. Another reason that this application is a must have is because it is free in any and every application store. It takes all of 60 seconds to download and it is highly efficient and effective. I recently downloaded Evernote to my iPhone and it has the changed the way that I am able to organize and utilize my information and notes. I would highly recommend this application to any businessman or woman reading this blog post that is looking for more ways to become more organized and have easy access to their information.

Below are videos links to further explain the tools available for utilization in Evernote:

Marketing in the Digital Age

By: Langston Curry

As we have discussed in class, many things in the economy are turning digital. This switch from the Analog Age has increased the demand for all types of businesses to be run digitally and/or through the Internet. With these digital businesses, come digital marketing.  Digital marketing is “marketing that makes use of electronic devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, cellphones, digital billboards, and game consoles to engage with consumers and other business partners.”
Recently, certain universities have developed digital marketing curriculums to prepare students to become instant assets to their respective employers, by being experts in the realm of social media, and digital technology. Top-level executives have recognized the digital cultural shift and are struggling to keep up. Businesses are no longer effective advertising their services and goods in newspapers, magazines, and even normal Facebook pages. Our generation reads everything online, with technology. Businesses are hiring young people to handle their specific digital marketing endeavors that they have no clue how to do.
The University of Dayton has a digital marketing program in which teams of four students are formed to join forces with local businesses. Their jobs are to develop digital marketing strategies using social media, websites, analytics, and mobile technology. The goal of the program is to help businesses convert their marketing strategy to a digital approach, by using students who live a digital lifestyle everyday.  The program has really helped students to gain relevant work experience such as project management and teamwork. I think that this is a great idea that many more schools should duplicate. The companies that are teamed up with this program have already reported much success with their marketing.
There has also been a lot of talk on “consumers breaking down the big brand wall”. This is an ongoing discussion on how search engines, a sharing economy, and apps are slowly beginning to eradicate the need for services that big name companies offer. Search engines have made it so that consumers can look up vast amounts of information, see opinions on businesses, and write reviews on services they have received. The economy has been turning into a collaborative economy, in which people share reviews on everything from car rentals, hotel stays, clothes, etc.  Consumers do not have to go through large corporations to find out the most valuable information on these things. All they have to do is Google a forum, or download one of the millions of apps that have all of the information they need readily accessible. The best part about it; it’s convenient, and generally free.  All of these shifts are forcing business to change their marketing practices, or else get left behind.
