Marketing in the Digital Age

By: Langston Curry

As we have discussed in class, many things in the economy are turning digital. This switch from the Analog Age has increased the demand for all types of businesses to be run digitally and/or through the Internet. With these digital businesses, come digital marketing.  Digital marketing is “marketing that makes use of electronic devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, cellphones, digital billboards, and game consoles to engage with consumers and other business partners.”
Recently, certain universities have developed digital marketing curriculums to prepare students to become instant assets to their respective employers, by being experts in the realm of social media, and digital technology. Top-level executives have recognized the digital cultural shift and are struggling to keep up. Businesses are no longer effective advertising their services and goods in newspapers, magazines, and even normal Facebook pages. Our generation reads everything online, with technology. Businesses are hiring young people to handle their specific digital marketing endeavors that they have no clue how to do.
The University of Dayton has a digital marketing program in which teams of four students are formed to join forces with local businesses. Their jobs are to develop digital marketing strategies using social media, websites, analytics, and mobile technology. The goal of the program is to help businesses convert their marketing strategy to a digital approach, by using students who live a digital lifestyle everyday.  The program has really helped students to gain relevant work experience such as project management and teamwork. I think that this is a great idea that many more schools should duplicate. The companies that are teamed up with this program have already reported much success with their marketing.
There has also been a lot of talk on “consumers breaking down the big brand wall”. This is an ongoing discussion on how search engines, a sharing economy, and apps are slowly beginning to eradicate the need for services that big name companies offer. Search engines have made it so that consumers can look up vast amounts of information, see opinions on businesses, and write reviews on services they have received. The economy has been turning into a collaborative economy, in which people share reviews on everything from car rentals, hotel stays, clothes, etc.  Consumers do not have to go through large corporations to find out the most valuable information on these things. All they have to do is Google a forum, or download one of the millions of apps that have all of the information they need readily accessible. The best part about it; it’s convenient, and generally free.  All of these shifts are forcing business to change their marketing practices, or else get left behind.

  1. I think it is interesting that students are getting involved in digital marketing while they are in school. This probably means that this is a hands on way of reaching to consumers and probably easy to do.

  3. I think digital marketing has to be involved in curriculum. It is such a vital portion of the new business model that colleges have to adapt their curriculum to include them just as they had to do the same with computers.
