The Future of Interactive Media and Reality Television

BY: Kesmond Moultrie-Legree

This article discuss the future of interactive media and reality television, Interactive media is defined as “the integration of digital media including combinations of electronic text, graphics, moving images, and sound, into a structured digital computerized environment that allows people to interact with the data for appropriate purposes.   Based on the success of shows such as American Idol, Survivor, The Bachelor, and The Real World, and their use of interactive media to enhance viewership, we can expect to see increased usage in the future.  Technology is constantly improving, providing networks with new opportunities to apply interactive media within their shows. Some field experts, such as Jason Gould, who “headed up an interactive media firm” in the early 1990s and “was a pioneering force in helping broadcasting tap its digital potential”, believe that “digital outfits have to see the future of interactive media to entice local-media partners”. I think there no reason to believe that we will see a decline of interactive media within the entertainment industry it may well change its shape and form from fixed to mobile limited media to rich media limited interaction to real time interaction.

The best example i think of how interactive media has change the climate of today's television, is by taking a closer look at all the reality tv shows out right now. There seems to be reality shows on everything that you could think of. Anything that seems like it is interesting has been turned into a reality show. Millions of people tune in to watch reality shows to see what will happen on that episode.

One of the most appealing parts of reality shows is that anyone could star in a reality show. Reality shows choose stars that are normal viewers that star in these shows. This makes reality shows even more appealing to the public, making them realize that you don't have to come from a wealthy family to become a star. It almost gives hope to a viewer that they, too, can become the next big celebrity. During many of the shows the viewers can interact with   Almost every network on television have some kind of reality tv show on it,  Many factors can be drawn in to why reality tv has been so successful, but undoubtedly one of the most important is the interactive media culture.

One of the key elements in the success to all these reality tv shows is the connection that viewers have with the talent on the shows through social media, reality tv trivia games, and also on the singing shows like The Voice and Americal Idol the viewers can text message there vote for their favorite contestant.

  2. it is amazing how many people have become famous off these types of shows. People love to make fun of this type of television and slam it for being irrelevant but if there wasn't a market for it, then it wouldn't exist.

  4. Interactive media is definitely on the growth especially with television. Viewers having the opportunity to vote and choose on TV shows makes them feel like they are a part of the show. This is why it becomes "interactive" because technology has enabled people not just to be viewers, but fans that can dictate the course of the program. Reality shows are also becoming a huge trend due to the fact that it seems as if your everyday person can be chosen for one. It gives them a chance to compete in challenges for money, prizes, or even just bragging rights. Interactive media and reality television will only continue to evolve along with technology as we move deeper into the 21st century.

  6. I feel that the most intriguing part of reality television is that is shows the humanistic side of society that often scripted media cannot portray, The form of media brings viewers closer to the cast, which increases support. In the case of interactive media, it allows viewers to become even closer to the show, with channels such as MTV offering extra footage and also more leverage in the viewing experience, which in the end helps their shows thrive. I can only guess that interactive media will become more innovative as time progresses.

  7. This is definitely one way to get people more involved into these kinds of shows because when I know when I used to watch these kinds of shows it was very hard to interact with the show due to phone charges etc. Now that they are more interactive it will keep people a lot more intrigued because it will make people feel like they are actually doing something.
