TWITTER TAKEOVER

By: Evan J. Watt

Social media has changed the world. Social media is defined as the interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. The top three social media sites according to ebizmba.com are:
  1. Facebook (900,000,000 users),
  2. Twitter (310,000,000 users) and
  3. LinkedIn (250,000,000 users).

Tumblr is sixth on the list with 110,000,000 users while Instagram is seventh with 85,000,000 users.  These sites have transcended the way we communicate we each other and the world. The majority of the breaking news our generation receives comes through the vice of twitter. For example when the Philadelphia Eagles released DeSean Jackson I found out through twitter before the report was released by ESPN.  Twitter is the fastest outlet for news in our generation.  Twitter does produce “false” news, but our generation is able to depict what is real and fake news.

Twitter is also a form entertainment.  For example, meme’s, and vines have made people famous such as Terio.  Twitter has changed people’s lives and it

Enough Chicago Alternative Spring Break

By: Raynard Ware

As spring break approached, a group of Morehouse students passed up the beach and warm weather in Florida, to spend their break doing service in the inner city of Chicago. Morehouse’s senior, Corey Hardiman is a passionate young man that constructed and orchestrated this alternative spring break trip. I, myself, had the opportunity to participate in this wonderful humbling experience, in the Roseland area on the south side of Chicago.

While most would have complained about the long Mega Bus rides, early morning wakes or even housing in a shelter for a week, this was all a part of the experience. We went to Chicago with a goal, and that goal was to inspire at least one child, if not more. The first activity immediately after we settled in the shelter, was a food drive. We provided can goods and other supplementary/complementary goods to families in need.

We also had a chance to go to Corey’s former elementary school, Lavizzo  Elementary, where we motivated elementary school students to read more. Moreover, we were well-dressed African-American men representing Morehouse College in a very good fashion. We canvassed with a group called, “Cease Fire”, in which we informed residents about the importance of community and justice.

While traveling at least 40 hours round trip via Mega Bus, we really made an impact on the future generations of society. All of the 15 men of Morehouse were really passionate about this trip. Although, we did not receive funding from Morehouse, this trip not only received local recognition, but received nation recognition as well. Next you all should really look into this alternative spring break.

Brain Chips!!!

BY: Alexander Tyson

Its real people, the technology that we have once questioned possible is closer than you think. A recent incident caused a woman to become paralyzed and scientists have developed a censor that was placed in her motor cortex. Just by thought she can pick up drinks and reach for objects with a robotic arm. Eventually she will become more sophisticated and become capable of brushing her teeth and have fluent movement. This project sprung from the recent accomplishment of scientist who implanted a computer chip into a monkey’s brain to control the movements of another monkey.

This project of a monkey controlling another was aimed to find possible ways to treat people with cervical spinal cord injuries, and is quadriplegic, or have had brain stem strokes, which is proving to be successful. What scientist have accomplished was creating a functional cortical to spinal bypass where their able to record neural signals in the brain, extract information about what the user is intending on doing and then basically stimulating the spinal cord to produce movements in their paralyzed limb to those same intended target locations. For example, if the user were intending on moving upwards, they would select specific electrode contacts in the spinal cord to stimulate a movement that reaches that exact same target location.

This project itself is an innovative idea intended to help those who have had complications with their health. It would be cool to have the ability someday to send emails, text messages, download books, etc….but the speculation around these projects turning into a government experiment is not far fetched. In my opinion I would not be surprised if this idea and innovative achievement was twisted to a scheduled event to further monitor the movements of citizens. The president himself said they are trying to build an iron man to further protect troops deployed, but are they also trying to develop a kind of similar innovative chip in soldier’s brain to drop airstrikes at a thought? This new project is being called the Systems-Based Neurotechnology for Emerging Therapies (SUBNETS), and the goal is to be able to monitor the “mental health” of soldiers and veterans.  The following is how a recent CNET article described SUBNETS

Sony Takes You In To The Virtual World

BY: Kendall Thomas

The rumors were true: Sony really has developed a virtual reality headset and unveiled it at the Game Developers Conference on March 18. Computer and Video Games reports that Sony officially took the wraps off its Project Morpheus VR headset that it said represents “the next innovation from PlayStation that may well shape the future of games.” Sony demonstrated a prototype of the headset at GDC on Wednesday, March 19 and it served as the first virtual reality software development kit for PlayStation 4 developers. Richard Marks, Sony’s head of research and development, said that Project Morpheus “is special because it gives you a feeling of being somewhere else.” Sony has even gotten some help from NASA on Project Morpheus, as Computer and Video Games says that the first demonstration on the headset will be a virtual walkthrough of Mars based on NASA terrain data.

If you didn’t attend the Game Developers Conference this year, you missed out on the unveiling of Sony’s latest foray into virtual reality with Project Morpheus. But if you’d still like to see the momentous occasion, the whole presentation is now online for your viewing pleasure. Sony President Shu Yoshida introduced Project Morpheus on stage last week over the course of an hourlong presentation in which he explained the technology that powers the prototype device and gave developers a first look at what will be possible with the headset. Along with the main event, Sony has also uploaded an official hands-on video showing the device in action.

Monday April 14, 2014 - End of Reconstruction beginning of Jim Crow

The Southern States worked hard after the Civil War to reject the Reconstruction Acts passed by Congress and added to the Constitution. It took over 40 years but they succeed by the early 1900's to enact laws and use other tools to put Black Men "back in their place".
