The
rumors were true: Sony really has developed a virtual reality headset and unveiled
it at the Game Developers Conference on March 18. Computer and Video Games reports that Sony officially took the
wraps off its Project Morpheus VR headset that it said represents “the next
innovation from PlayStation that may well shape the future of games.” Sony
demonstrated a prototype of the headset at GDC on Wednesday, March 19 and it
served as the first virtual reality software development kit for PlayStation 4
developers. Richard Marks, Sony’s head of research and development, said
that Project Morpheus “is special because it gives you a feeling of being
somewhere else.” Sony has even gotten some help from NASA on Project Morpheus,
as Computer and Video Games
says that the first demonstration on the headset will be a virtual walkthrough
of Mars based on NASA terrain data.
If
you didn’t attend the Game Developers Conference this year, you missed out on
the unveiling of Sony’s latest foray into virtual reality with Project
Morpheus. But if you’d still like to see the momentous occasion, the whole
presentation is now online for your viewing pleasure. Sony President Shu
Yoshida introduced Project Morpheus on stage last week over the course of an
hourlong presentation in which he explained the technology that powers the
prototype device and gave developers a first look at what will be possible with
the headset. Along with the main event, Sony has also uploaded an official
hands-on video showing the device in action.
I am very impressed with Sony's technology advancement. I know that this will change the gaming industry dramatically, opening doors for new methods to create games, new equipment, and new softwares.
