Rivalry Taken To Court

BY: Drew Wilkins

The battle of the premier cell phone has been taken to court. Apple has just began detailing there 2.2 billion dollar damages claim against Samsung. Apples iPhone and Samsung galaxies are the premier two phones on the market now.
Apple is claiming that Samsung committed copyright infringement. Apple claims that Samsung stole their “slide-to-unlock” function that takes the lock screen to the home screen, universal search- a function that searches results from the phone to the internet.  The ability to sync data in the background; automatic word correction as a user types, and contextual links that attach a menu to items such as phone numbers , email addresses and post addresses.
Apple is claiming that Samsung had made near 2.2 billion dollars from stealing these ideas and look to receive this money through the suit. Some question whether this is an attempt for Apple to just damage there competitors sales as well as making up lost income. Apple also claims that by Samsung stealing their ideas they have stolen a lot of first time smartphones buyers. This is said to be very important because there has been studies that show once you buy a smart one you are very likely to stay with that first smartphone company.

  1. I must say that I think these powerhouse companies should just give it a rest... To me it seems as if Apple may just be bored and need something to do. Yes the swipe unlock feature is on both devices but at the end of the day that aspect will not change someone's preference between the android system and the iOS. At the end of the day both of these companies have more money than they can spend in 50 lifetimes so I think arguing over button semantics is just ridiculous.

  2. I can't believe Apple took Samsung to court because the Samsung products were "too similar" to Apple's. This is a prime example of a company abusing the resources it has (legal, capital) at hand to try to sue another company into submission. I like seeing Apple try to fight Samsung because Apple cannot sue everyone out of existence. This is not a fair use of legal proceedings.

  3. I think issues like this will always arise simply because of the generally accepted design of phone in today's time. Companies are trying to be more competitive and because of this they are either copying or reverse engineering other companies products. Samsung just needs more creativity and R&D to avoid legal problems like this.

  4. I believe a healthy rivalry between companies promotes innovation and leads to higher quality products. Whether this particular instance can be helpful or harmful for competition remains to be seen; however Apple practicing its right to protect its products and identity within such a large market is understandable and helps to reinforce the protection companies need in order for their ideas to remain their own.

  5. I think it is really ridiculous that Apple took Samsung to court for Samsung slide to unlock being similar. I feel like Apple has enough money and plenty of faithful Apple customers to not be so petty.

  6. It would be nice is Apple would utilize the resources that they spend on suing Samsung and create something even better. I believe they should focus more energy on producing new products for their customers rather than focusing on the competition.

  7. Tech companies sue each other for every little thing. Essentially, they all race to patent a certain feature that they claim to have created first. As far as smartphones go, it is only so many ways to unlock a phone so it is only inevitable for another company to "steal" that.

  8. I am not familiar with the slide to unlock function on Samsung devices so I cannot determine wether the case is valid. With that being said I don't see Apple winning this case, or if they do, no real benefit will come from it. But I do not mind Apple suing Samsung and essentially challenging them to be more innovative and to create their own features instead of drawing off of Apple.

  9. I really think there will be law suits going back and forth. both companies use technology or ideas from the others

  10. I believe that Apple and Samsung should continue to be competitive and create innovative phones and technology. Two great competitors!
